BURBANK FIRE FIGHTERS PARTICIPATE IN SPARK OF LOVE
The Burbank Fire Department collects toys and sporting goods during the month of December under the Spark of Love banner. The Spark of Love is a California toy collection campaign with ABC7 and local fire departments to provide families in need with some holiday cheer. Toys are collected at the fire stations and at special events. Santa is coming to town! The Metrolink Holiday Toy Express is our largest special event, and is scheduled for Friday Dec. 11, 5:30-7:45 at the Burbank Metrolink Station located at 201 N. Front Street. This is a great party and helps everyone get in the holiday spirit. The 450 ton train is decorated with over 50,000 lights and will deliver family entertainment, music, and Santa. We will have our Fire Engine 11 and Truck 11 with all the firefighters there to help collect the toys. The Weinerwagon from Weinerschnitzel (a division of Galardi Group, INC) will be in attendance again this year serving meals to all who bring something for the toy drive. Everything collected is distributed to local families within Burbank. ABC7 will broadcast from the event which is shown on the evening news. Your partnership will help insure our success, so please come down and experience the party.

BURBANK FIRE CAPTAIN INSTRUMENTAL IN FIREGROUND SAFETY PROGRAM

BURBANK FIRE CAPTAIN DAVE SCHMITT TRAINS FIREFIGHTERS TO SURVIVE FIREGROUND SITUATIONS
Burbank Fire Captain Dave Schmitt has spent much of the past two years working with other fire experts to develop a curriculum designed to teach firefighters how to survive a variety of situations that could potentially kill them.
The program was put together by the International Associations of Fire Fighters, who provided the funding and oversight. Led by L.A. County Fire Captain Derek Alkonis, Capt. Schmitt spent hundreds of hours with a training cadre in putting together instructional videos, props designed to duplicate possible "entrapment scenarios" and methods of initiating teams of firefighters to rescue the trapped or lost firefighter.
The Burbank Fire Department made a significant investment of Capt. Schmitt's time in order to assist the entire fire service of North America in saving the lives of firefighters. Other participating departments included the Fire Department of New York, L. A. County F.D., Toronto F.D. and Chicago F.D. Pictured below is Captain Schmitt explaining to a firefighter how to escape from a common entrapment situation for firefighters; one in which fire causes a ceiling assembly to come down on the firefighter, entangling him in a web of wires.
